Looking the Best at Any Age

Not everyone has the luxury to spend hours at the spa or has an exorbitant sum of money to spend on hair and clothes. But you do have the right to look and feel the best at any age. Take control of your health and fitness at whatever age and your inner beauty will radiate outwards.

Look carefully through our various cosmetic surgery webpages and information brochures, and spend time talking with Dr Briggs and our staff, and you’ll soon come across our advice for smokers to stop smoking well before their surgery. Patients who smoke through their recovery period tend to bleed more and take longer to heal from just about any cosmetic surgery procedure.

The opposite is true for people who maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle – post-operative healing from cosmetic and plastic surgery is faster and tends to have less complications.

So it’s pretty straightforward that at any age you should maintain your health and fitness, and have a beauty regime in spite of the unique lifestyle challenges you face as you get older. Take control of your interests and your inner beauty will surely radiate outwards.

Health and Beauty through Diet
Our first health tip is to achieve a healthy diet. This isn’t a specific diet for slimming or for dropping those pounds for summer. Our tip is for you to adopt a sensible diet by eating regular meals low in calories but high in nutritional value.

Good eating habits mean that you don’t binge on junk foods, tubs of ice-cream, or chocolate. It’s not that you can’t eat these goodies, the key is not to binge or enjoy them excessively. Nor is it wise to skip meals. Eating moderately at regular intervals is old-fashioned advice but very sensible and logical. Eat fresh foods prepared well, and have a variety from different food groups at each meal. If you really want to take care of yourself and the environment, switch your meat intake with vegetable protein from beans, tofu, and legumes.

Ultimately, buy good quality foods but if you can’t afford to, try to stay away from overly processed foods that are high in fat or sugars. Do this regularly and don’t sweat the small chocolates! Go ahead and reward yourself with a small treat every now and then.

Once you’ve settled into eating for health, remember the secret to maintain a svelte figure is to make sure calories in equals calories out. Meaning if you eat more, you need to burn off more. If you eat moderately, you have to do burn less calories off. Eat more than you burn and you’ll start to store your energy as fat.

As important as diet is hydration. Too many people nowadays forget to drink regularly through the day and are constantly dehydrated. This can result in a host of undesirable health problems like bad breath, urinary tract problems, constipation and poor dental health. Water helps your circulation, keeps your internal organs healthy, and helps you have beautiful skin and lips. Drinking soft drinks, coffee (a natural diuretic), or worse still alcohol will not help keep your fluids up. Additionally, some individuals mistake thirst for hunger. You need to be drinking water and drinking it constantly.

Beauty Therapy at the Gym
There is nothing more attractive than a fit physique and a woman who moves confidently in her own skin. But there is no secret to getting yourself fit and trim. There is no pill you can pop, no liposuction, no cream, nor no special ab machine you can buy which substitutes for a good all over workout program!

Similar to our advice on keeping your diet sensible, you should approach exercise with a good attitude and understanding that fitness is a journey and not a destination. Look at your schedule and start including physical activity through social events. Bring along a girl friend or family members and enjoy different ways to spend your free time.

Once you’re ready to up the ante, then it’s time for you to think about working on your strength and cardiovascular fitness.

Strong taut muscles give a lovely shape to your limbs, help you burn calories by raising your metabolic rate, and helps reduce the brittling of bones as you age. Strength-based training once or twice a week is essential for good health and will not result in you looking like Ms or Mr Universe.

Most gyms will be able to help you with your physical strength using free weights or exercise machines, and circuit training where you use your own body weight. When you get yourself introduced to a warm up routine and a good range of strength-based exercises you may even choose to invest in some simple equipment to use at home.

Hand-in-hand with your strength training is cardiovascular fitness. This is about increasing your heart rate and overall physical endurance by sweating it out. Cardiovascular fitness can be improved through running or swimming, but don’t rule out sports or social activities like dancing, yoga or kick boxing.

Cardiovascular training should be maintained for about half an hour and should be moderate to intense. The beauty benefits of good cardiovascular fitness are wide ranging from healthy glowing complexion to managing stress levels to just feeling great about life. Cardiovascular fitness really adds to physical confidence and this relates to all aspects of beauty. So you can get fit, feel sexy, and recover faster from surgical procedures all at the same time!

Cardiovascular workouts complement a healthy diet to keep you trim and looking healthy.

Beauty through the Decades
20s You’re partying. You’re socialising. You’re keeping to a good balanced and regular diet in order to retain that fresh youthful look! Plenty of water keeps your skin and body hydrated. When you go out in the sun you still reach for sun block and hat to keep your skin un-damaged. And if you really think you look better tanned, you can spray it on yourself. Simple and casual is your slogan for makeup, hair, and dress. You let your youth, energy and beautiful floral perfume speak for themselves.

30s You start strong. But you’re flat-out. You need to make sure you think of your needs and to schedule time for the important things in life. If it’s hanging out with the girls, let it be hanging out with the girls. If it’s a mental break, let it be a mental break. Keep perspective and maintain that balance in life. If you can, make time for an activity that will keep you active and relaxed at the same time. Checkout the local yoga centre or pilates course. Your beauty regiment should be back to basics: moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. DIY manicures and pedicures are alright, and make sure you keep your appearance neat and smart most of the time.

40s You’re hitting your stride. You’re noticing that you need to make more time for yourself. And you need a good moderate exercise program to build strength and cardiovascular fitness for long term health benefits. If you have doubts about your beauty as you age, forget them. 40 is the new 20! Start with looking out for your self – clothes, hair, facials – you deserve it! Dress sexy to feel sexy! Keeping occupied with new activities will be a way to meet new friends and to enjoy looking after your own interests. As before, look out for your nutritional needs but extend this to be attentive to your dental hygiene, regular health and blood checks.

50s You’re still you and you’re still feeling great! Now more than ever should you hit those weight bearing exercises to make sure your bones are strong. If running is not your scene, then get walking with a group of friends or swimming if you can manage the hassle. The vitality and energy you generate through keeping physically active will literally radiate from you. This kind of confidence should be how you choose to light your life. Don’t squirrel yourself in front of the telly or worry yourself with inconsequential details. Life is too short to spend time fretting.
