Male Breast Reduction Perth, Western Australia

Male Breast Reduction or as it is clinically known Gynaecomastia, is the removal of breast tissue from a man’s chest.

About Gynaecomastia

This is often an embarrassing, but yet relatively common problem among men. It involves excess breast tissue, which is comprised of both fatty tissue and mammary gland tissue, causing the male chest area to resemble breasts.

The existence of these “breasts” may be due to an imbalance in hormones, the use of medications such as steroids, or even to liver disease.

This condition may initially be improved by changing medications or treating the cause of abnormal hormone levels if these have been deemed to be the reason for the breast like appearance. However, for most men surgery to remove the excess tissue is the best and sometimes the only treatment option, as there is no known cause in the vast majority of cases.

Gynaecomastia Perth: The Operation

Gynaecomastia surgery is performed by Dr Briggs under general anaesthetic and may require an overnight stay in hospital.

There are two surgical methods for treating Gynaecomastia, which is used, depends on the type of tissue present in the breast.
  • Removal of Glandular Tissue: This method is used if it is mammary gland tissue that is present in the breast. To remove this tissue a small incision is made and the glands are dissected away from surrounding tissue.
  • Liposuction: This is used to remove excess fatty tissue through suction. A thin hollow tube or cannula is moved through the fatty tissue to break up the fat and suction it out.

Sometimes the two techniques are combined. In all cases, surgery continues until the area is flat and normal in appearance.

After Your Male Breast Reduction Surgery

Bruising and swelling will be apparent after the surgery and will settle down within the first few weeks.

You will need to wear a compression garment continuously for around three weeks and then at night for a period after that.

You will need to avoid strenuous exercise for at least a month post surgery and may return to work one or two weeks post surgery.
